Google Chrome 14.0.835.15 Dev

Google has made available for download the first Chrome release in August 2011, which coincides with an update of the Dev Channel. 

 
Early adopters can now download Google Chrome 14.0.835.15 Dev and start testing the new Build of the open source browser.


Google Chrome Available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, Chrome 14.0.835.15 Dev is only a minor update compared to its predecessor Chrome 14.0.835.8 Dev, that shipped to testers at the end of July 2011.

According to the Mountain View-based search giant, Chrome 14.0.835.15 Dev is designed to introduce a number of fixes that improve user experience.

Testers of Chrome 14.0 Dev are bound to notice that synchronization will no longer act up. At the same time, Google has dealt with a number of stability issues, and as such, Chrome 14.0.835.15 Dev should be superior to previous Dev Channel releases in terms of reliability.

Users have undoubtedly noticed that Google is taking its due time to provide the next major iteration of Chrome, although more than six weeks passed since Chrome 12.0 Stable was launched.

The Mountain View-based company is offering no explanation of the delay, but of course, Chrome 13.0 Stable will be offered to end users soon enough. At that time, Chrome 14.0 will move into Beta and Chrome 15.0 will graduate to the Dev Channel.

As far as I’m concerned the delay is somewhat understandable, especially since Google engineers now have to deal with an entirely new platform, Chrome OS.

Chrome 13.0.782.107 Beta (Platform v587.93) was introduced for Chrome OS / Chromebook users at the end of July 2011. Owners of Chromebooks such as Acer AC700, Samsung Series 5, and Cr-48 were all able to get Chrome 13.0.782.107 Beta as of the end of last month.

Although Chrome development is synchronized for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, updates for Chrome OS are served separately from traditional platforms.

Mozilla Firefox 5 Will Release

Mozilla Firefox 5 has been waited for quite long time now, and that makes both desktop and mobile users are pushing Mozilla to release that beta version soon. And finally, Mozilla grants their fans’ wishes by releasing the beta version of Mozilla Firefox 5, both for desktop and mobile OS.

The first downloadable version of Internet Explorer 9

We've been waiting a long time, and it's finally here! Microsoft has unveiled Internet Explorer 9.

Now, before you all stop reading to go and hit the Download button, be aware: this is not a standard web browser. Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview is just a very early version which allows developers and web designers to test their apps and websites within the new browser's environment.

That said, the new Internet Explorer 9 looks very promising. It features a much faster JavaScript engine (using multiple cores simultaneously), works with HTML5 for a lighter and richer web experience and makes a giant leap in standards compliance with support for CSS3. The Acid3 test results, however, fell a bit short of expectations at 55/100, though they're still better than Internet Explorer 8.

Technical details aside, Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview is more of a playground to test new features rather than a real IE9 demo. After installing it, you're taken to a test drive webpage where you can try out the new capabilities of Internet Explorer 9 with demos, animations, online maps, games and other testing material especially prepared by Microsoft. Some of them are really fun, like the T-Shirt Designer or the SVG-oids (Asteroids clone).

In short, Internet Explorer 9 is still at a very early stage of development. However, it's nice to be able to have a peek at the new features and follow all the changes and updates. According to Microsoft, there's going to be a new preview every two months, so keep tuned!

OpenBook 2.0.1.1

OpenBook is a Firefox add-on that promises to customize users' bookmarking experience. While it does work--to some extent--it doesn't do everything it promises, and doesn't make much of an effort to help you use it. In the end, it's a bit disappointing.

Firefox automatically installs add-ons like OpenBook when you download them, and you access and configure them from the Firefox add-on menu. OpenBook's interface consists of a small selection of check boxes and radio buttons. You can choose which components of Firefox's bookmarking dialogue you want OpenBook to display, including the keyword, URL, and description textboxes, the tags box, and the resizer. You can also choose whether the bookmarks tree opens automatically.

Unfortunately, what seemed like it would be the program's most useful feature, the capability to bypass the bookmarking dialogue completely, was nowhere to be found. We went to the publisher's Web site, where we found something resembling a Help file, but it was for an older version of OpenBook that didn't share the same interface. It didn't mention the dialogue bypass feature either. Overall, we weren't terribly impressed with OpenBook; it didn't seem to do anything to enhance the Firefox bookmarking experience.

OpenBook is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this Firefox add-on with reservations; it works, for the most part, but we didn't find it very helpful.
